My rating is not for the book, pe se, but specifically for this EDITION. I purchased this after seeing how expensive it is to buy the scholarly standard version printed by the Edinburgh University Press. I wanted a cheap copy that I could mark up. I can overlook the TINY font...or the strange spacing on the page. But what I can't overlook is that this version makes silent cuts...basically, entire paragraphs are missing. I don't think this is a matter of scholarly intervention (there's certainly no "textual notes" explaining editorial decisions)...it seems to be simply a matter of sloppy editing. My suggestion? Go buy the Edinburgh edition...or check it out from the library. Skip this version.

Woodstock or the Cavalier Sir Walter Scott 9781533357120 Books Reviews
I would never have discovered this work by Scott had my daughter not held him as one of her favorite authors and insisted that we read this particular book which my husband and I read aloud. I now hold it as one of my favorite novels and the character Alice Lee one of the greatest fictional heroines. Written in 1826, the setting is 1651 after Charles I has been beheaded, Oliver Cromwell is in power and Charles II is in hiding. In my opinion, the writing is superb. Its constant surprises are as good as the best spy novel and the many one on one scenes demonstrate an amazing understanding of psychology for the 19th century. Scott’s portrayal of Alice and the servant Phoebe show him to be a feminist a century before the term was known. Some of the language is not easy to discern but we found it well worth the effort.
Loved it!
Good read.
Started out real slow. Think some could have been cut out. Liked the romance of the era. Liked the historical subject. Well written. It's hard to realize something like this was written centuries ago. I would recommend it for anyone who likes classical literature.
Scott has a talent for skewering those who need it with a grand sense of humor, all the while pointing out why the history of the English Civil War needed this sort of 'supplement'
I read this after visiting Singer Castle on Dark Island on the St. Lawrence River in Upstate New York. That castle was modeled after and inspired by this book, do reading it was awesome. After reading it, definitely take a tour of the 1,000 islands! Aside from the love story of Boldt Castle, I actually liked it more!
